The expectations from LO are high on the Swedish government to be a role model and set the standard for the implementation of Agenda 2030. Focussing on how to reach out to all citizens and at the same time live up to Sweden’s international commitments will form the basis for the implementation.
The role of the social partners
In 2016 the Swedish government appointed a delegation representing different fields of society. Their assignment is to implement Agenda 2030 through dialogue and analyses. Based on consultation with different stakeholders: business, civil society and trade unions among others, the delegation will produce an action plan for Sweden's implementation. LO contributes with expertise on the the function of the labour market in relation to the 2030 Agenda.
Impact on all levels
The scope of the action plan is to be functional both nationally and internationally. The plan will take into account already existing and adopted development strategies that bind Sweden both nationally and through the EU. The action plan will also give clear guidance and proposals for Sweden locally, regionally and on the national level. The position of LO is clear - the autonomy of the social partners must be fully respected in the action plan and the special interest of the social partners taken into account in the relevant goals and targets.
When the 193 member countries of the UN celebrated the negotiation on the 2030 Agenda in September 2015 this was a considerable success. The realisation of the Agenda with its mission to give people a brighter future requires that countries like Sweden step up their efforts and show solidarity and responsibility. To advance the interests of workers in Sweden, LO will endeavor to achieve the fulfilment of the agenda and push for Sweden to stand in the forefront for sustainable economic development and decent work, against protectionism and populism.
