News from LO


LO is the central organisation for 14 affiliates which organise workers within both the private and the public sectors. The 14 affiliates together have about 1.700.000 members of whom about 770.000 are women.

The 14 affiliates of LO have independent status, and LO is primarily an organisation for co-ordination, research, signing labour market insurance schemes and creating public opinion at central and regional levels.

LO’s election campaign shows the failures of the present government On Monday 16 August, LO launched its campaign for the general elections which will be held on September 19. The aim of the campaign is to show that the policy of the present government is all wrong.

Growing number of poor among those on sick leave, jobless and pensioners 2010/07/06

The very richest and the very poorest people were those most affected by the economic crisis. These are the findings of a recent LO report on the Swedes’ incomes in 2008. The crisis, which hit in 2008, reduced the distributions of incomes in Sweden. Concurrently, the number of people with low incomes continued to escalate and in 2008 every tenth female blue-collar worker lived in a low income household. This was also the situation for every fifth person on sick-leave, jobless or pensioner.

Welfare more important than low taxes 2010/05/10

The need of resources to nursing and care services and education is according to the majority of Swedish voters a sufficient motive to raise taxes. This is one of the findings of an opinion poll carried out by a polltaking company by order of LO. Furthermore, three out of four surveyees find it unfair that those who are on sick-leave, unemployed or pensioners pay higher taxes than those who have a job.
